Can you get herpes from a contaminated gyne instrument?

A friend had been married to a virgin for 17 years and then divorced. After being in an 'exclusive' relationship for the last year she recently had developed a small leison a few days after a culposcopy at the gynecologist. Can herpes be caught (IF it turns out this is the case for her) from a gyne instrument? If her boyfriend gets tested and is negative could one deduce that any infection would be from the gyne instrument?
