Upnp stops some features on my ps3?

I got a new router the other day and found that i couldn't host any parties such as on black ops. I then fiddled about with my router, when I disabled upnp everything seemed to work ok but now my nat type stays as moderate. I thought upnp was meant to make gaming and things better.
